CARA MENJAGA RAMBUT SIHAT

What you eat can actually spell the difference between lovely and lacklustre tresses. So consult with your doctor, look at your next meal, and see if you're having enough of the nutrients on this list.

Proteins

Proteins build cells and contain amino acids crucial to hair growth. They can be found in meat, fish, poultry, eggs and other dairy products. Are you a vegetarian? You can also get proteins from soy, nuts, grains and seeds (although you may need a protein supplement). Consult your doctor or dietitian as well: Some advise that at least 15 per cent of your calories must come from protein-rich food.

Carbohydrates

Today's low-carbohydrate diets may lead to steady weight loss, but it may also affect your hair's health. Why? Because carbohydrates help in tissue growth and are also the body's primary source of much-needed B vitamins. So veer away from carb-free programmes that last for long periods of time (even the South Beach diet limits the First Phase to three weeks), and cut out the sugars and white flour. Instead, get healthy with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, brown rice and potatoes.

Fat

You still need a little fat in your diet for your body — and hair — to stay healthy. Choose lean meat that is grilled or braised, rather than fried. Try to resist those hamburgers!

A note on vitamins and minerals

Your body needs the right amount of vitamins and minerals to create strong cells — which is why some people who have unsupervised diets that lack the proper vitamins and minerals may report hair loss. Strands may be brittle and easily damaged, and look dull despite all efforts to condition and style them. Your hair is also unable to withstand the damage caused by brushing, hair drying and UV rays.
If your face appears a bit blotchy and pale when you skip meals, just imagine what it can do to your hair: You can expect it to feel limp and lifeless.

Prone to crash diets?

Crash dieting affects the body's chemical balance. Severe stress may sometimes cause hair loss, but lack of nutrition can trigger a hormonal imbalance too. This can aggravate and hamper healthy hair growth.

Invest in good hair products

Given the wide range of hair care products available, selecting the right product can be overwhelming. Your hair condition and texture are some of the factors that need to be taken into consideration before you decide on a product. If you are still unsure, you can always check with an experienced hair stylist to make the right pick. Choose your hair care products wisely because they will ultimately reflect on your hair.
